Kay Uffelman

Reading specialist

The reading specialist assists students by helping them develop reading skills that enable them to be successful in the classroom. By using the DIBELS assessments, the reading coach and teachers are able to use the data and provide interventions for students in need. The reading specialist serves as part of the school wide team to implement these interventions. It is our goal to have every student reading at grade level.

The students at Ralph Witter's Elementary are taught the five components of reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension. Students are encouraged to read daily to improve their reading. Parents can also support their students by having them read at home. If your child is young and has not learned to read yet, then read aloud to your child. Creating a love for reading is an important element in learning to read.
